Osseous Surgery in Elizabethtown, KY

Prior to beginning osseous surgery, you will most likely need to undergo a gum surgery examination with Dr. Robert Franklin. Osseous surgery is used to create a clean environment and eliminate any harmful bacteria that may be surrounding a tooth. It is generally performed as a last resort to prevent tooth loss when a periodontal pocket remains unresponsive to other treatments and continues to worsen.

How Osseous Surgery Works

Before the surgery begins, Dr. Franklin will administer a local anesthesia to numb the area and reduce any pain or discomfort during the procedure. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, an incision will be made in the area receiving treatment. The tissue is then pulled away from the tooth to expose and allow access to the underlying bone structure. Dr. Franklin will then clean the surface of the tooth and remove any plaque and tartar deposits that have built up. Bleeding gums are common during this stage.
The next step is to smooth the surface of the bone. In addition to bleeding gums, the bacteria that become trapped in the periodontal pockets can eat away at the bone, giving it a rough, uneven texture. In order for proper healing to take place, a smooth bone surface is necessary.

Finally, the gum tissue is trimmed and stitched into place. Sutures will hold the tissue in place until the area has fully healed.

The Healing Process

After the surgery, you may be prescribed pain medication to help with any post-operative pain or soreness. Within seven to ten days, you will have your stitches removed. It is not uncommon to experience sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures in the areas that have been treated.
